About Our Counselor
Miguel Barillas, LCSW
"The lasting impact of mistreatment and trauma often lead to cycles of anxiety and depression. Sometimes this stressful burden causes us to respond in self-sabotaging ways. But there is hope. And there is a way to do it without feeling overwhelmed."
About My Approach
When stress arises, people often react with anxiety, anger, or depression. These responses can become habitual coping mechanisms that contribute to ongoing unhappiness. Individuals sometimes experience recurring cycles of anxiety and depression that significantly impact their lives.
I understand how overwhelming these symptoms can be and the hesitation you may feel about seeking treatment—especially if past therapy left you feeling "stuck" or yielded limited results. But it doesn't have to be that way. I specialize in Somatic Experiencing®, a highly effective therapy that requires years of specialized training. Together, we'll gently target your symptoms without overwhelming you, aiming to enhance your overall well-being.
Specialties
I specialize in guiding individuals who are struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, and challengers their relationships or social networks. Sometimes, difficult life events leave a lasting impact on our lives. These experiences aren't limited to war veterans or assault victims; they can also be events from childhood or adulthood—such as enduring harsh punishments, mistreatment, surgical procedures, or involvement in accidents.
Lastly, besides graduating with a Master’s in Clinical Work and being trained in Somatic Experiencing® I have been trained to work with children, adolescents, and adults for over three years in a full-time program at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute.
